The 45th Annual International AFRICAN ARTS FESTIVAL

Today, the IAAF is a community-based, non-profit organization that produces an annual event attracting an estimated 75,000 attendees from all over Brooklyn, New York City, the United States and from around the world.
In 2001 the IAAF relocated to Commodore Barry Park which is the third transition to a larger venue to accommodate its growing audience. The original line-up of local folk arts entertainment which has included dance companies such as Dinizulu African Dancers and Drummers, Marie Brooks Pan-Caribbean Dancers, emerging singers like Martha Redbone and many others continues to be an important part of the Festival’s programming. Over the years, the stages of the Festival have featured renowned artists such as Blue Magic, The Mighty Sparrow, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, KRS-1, Lauryn Hill, India Arie; artists who grew to achieve national and international acclaim.
The small vendor market has grown into an African Marketplace with over a hundred micro-enterprise vendor/small business membership database of entrepreneurs. The market place offers an array of one of a kind, handcrafted, original designs of merchandise ranging from jewelry, urban fashion, t-shirts, body oils to imported African fabric, artifacts and furniture, original paintings, hand-carved marble sculptures and much more. In addition, the outdoor Food Court offers the community an array of talented cooks and chefs preparing a wide variety of scrumptious foods. The savory favors range from traditional soul food to spicy Caribbean dishes, to African, Latin, vegetarian food, seafood and even gourmet style raw foods

Ancient Blends :HOLIDAY POPUP SHOP
Pop-up shops are physical stores that retailers inhabit on a short-term basis, such as 30, 60, or 90 days. Some shops may even pop up for one day only. Pop-ups can be holiday stores, concept stores, galleries, exhibitions, or cafe/restaurant promotions, but they involve a tenant taking empty retail or commercial real estate, outfitting it to suit their business needs, and then operating the space on a short-term basis with a finite assortment of goods.
Cowrie Shell Center Holiday POPUPSHOP 2014 (12/20/2014) |
This holiday season in major cities like New York means plenty of bright lights, elaborate window displays and, increasingly, pop-up stores. But for local artists like myself and many others, why we do pop-ups isn't just for showing off our products. We continue to strive and to build cooperative economics. During a critical time of year we collectively and creatively offer themes and events to catch a shopper’s eye, many brands are using now using temporary storefronts to attract consumers with unique ideas and one-of-a-kind experiences that aren’t available in a regular brick-and-mortar shop.
Here, inside Cowrie Shell boutique, I have created an eclectic shopping experience, while you relax in the ambience, listening to chants of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and sipping a warm mug of cinnamon spiced apple cider. We’re continuing to transform The Cowrie Shell Center and Ancient Blends boutique into a lifestyle brand, in part by appealing to a new generation of Ancient Blends customers via social media with memorable experiences at Cowrie Shell Boutique and unexpected pop up shopping experience this holiday season. We're seeing the big brands now use Pop-Ups as a means to find different ways to connect with customers. Pop-ups are a 'tried and true' way to get to consumers quickly and to provide a memorable touch-and-feel experience. |

INFO ABOUT THIS EVENT:
The International African Arts Festival began in 1971 as the African Street Carnival, a PTA’s block party fundraiser for an independent school in Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn with local entertainers, about 20 arts and crafts vendors, along with food prepared by the parents. Almost 2,000 people came to the event and it was a success. The International African Arts Festival (IAAF) has been part of the Brooklyn’s cultural landscape for 40 years. Each year a committed team of Board members, consultants, part-time seasonal staff and volunteers, work together to transform a city park into an outdoor African cultural oasis that celebrates traditional and contemporary expression of various African cultural art forms.

Personally, being an Afro-Caribbean woman and an entrepreneur for the past 30 years has blessed me with countless rich, healthy, mind, body and spiritual experiences while doing the work that I love so much. MANIFESTATIONS: Workshop & Meditation with Yendys Nefer-Atum (founder/hair care practitioner/Priestess/healer)
(three 20 min sessions)
1:30pm...Part 1 (Attracting Light)
This meditation strengthens your energy field so that you attract more light because the Universe responds to the thoughts we send out. During this time, you'll be put into a relaxed state and asked to visualize three different things that you wish to manifest or materialize. Feel free to manifest your heart’s desire with this particular manifestation meditation. Think big!
4:30pm...Part 2 (Connecting Inward)
You can think of contacting your source as connecting with your higher self, the God-like being who dwells within you. Being in contact with your higher self is described as a deep sense of knowingness and certainty, also of power, love, and intuitiveness. You know that you are creating your own experience of life and that you have the power to create the experiences that are important and necessary for your own growth process. Go within!
6:30pm...Part 3 Sacred Space (Goddesses Only)
In this meditation, we will use carnelian stones or a yoni egg (please bring yours). Carnelian is an orange color stone that aligns with your sacral chakra. It is one of the oldest gemstones, treasured by the ancient Khamites (Egyptians). The clasp of Auset was carved from this gemstone. This stone promotes joy, laughter, and an open heart. All the things necessary for love of others, love of self, and love of nature. This stone has been used for mental and physical balance, to inspire ambition, to strengthen self-confidence, and to help one achieve their goals. This magical meditation is designed to positively impact and spiritually increase your capacity to love. I encourage you to do this meditation each time you desire to create something new or if you feel you're lacking in creative energy. Over time, you will see amazing changes as long as you have an open mind and open heart. Sacred space!

Since 1992, I have held the distinction of being one of Brooklyn's true and consistent pioneers of natural hair care and the natural hair care product industry. Almost three decades later, I'm on a brand new journey of redefining the appearance of my natural product line Ancient Blends.
HERE'S THE LINK:
I WOULD TRULY APPRECIATE YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS:
http://www.gofundme.com/ancient-blends
This name Ancient Blends was inspired by ancestral whisperings in my ears; ancient wisdom, nothing new under the sun and keep our daily care connected to the earth; maintain pure, natural, simplicity. I was inspired to create Ancient Blends natural products in order to fulfill the needs of my clients hair and scalp, to breathe life back to our divine coifs and crowns during my earlier years as a hair care provider. I am a hair healer! A practitioner of natural hair care!
Today, my plant based product line truly speaks for itself as it has fast become a household name. I believe that my products definitely meet the trending and fast growing needs of the natural hair and health conscious communities of kinky, coily, curly hair...Ancient Blends product line consists of hair and scalp oils, shampoo, facial moisturizing oils, body butters, aromatic body sprays, herbally infused, naturally scented body oils, herbal hair tea and more. I'm deeply touched and grateful to those who have continuously supported me and my products and services throughout the many years. I've done what I can do by myself at this point. I need a TEAM! I'm now reaching out for community monetary assistance. For years, Ancient Blends products have planted themselves in the hearts and minds (especially hearts) of hundreds of clients, customers and prospective shoppers.
Moving forward, I already have a logo... the new identity will satisfy all of the existing expectations of what Ancient Blends products already stand for. In keeping things simple, I will not be changing any of the products, just continuing to deliver a great value product and services that satisfies your expectations batch after batch, time after time, delivery after delivery.
I'm hoping to raise the much needed capital to use for the purpose of Branding and repackaging my product line. My expertises are not in this area, so I'll need to turn this project into the trusted hands of the artists.Your donations will fund a team of creatives to manifest this project. I'm already connected with a web manager, a graphic artist, a photographer and the printing company. Repackaging is a huge part of this project. I'll also need supplies for product manufacturing, packaging i.e. labels, bottles, jars, boxes, bags and also product shipping supplies.
We as consumers are most drawn to a 'well done' presentation. Ancient Blends aspires to be represented in the best light possible going forward. By spring 2014, I visualize this product line reaching a much wider market. What good is having a wonderful natural product line if the masses doesn't know about it?
Help me put Ancient Blends natural hair and body care products on the map...and in the homes of your friends and family. With your donations, we can make it possible for our childrens' children to have the natural healthy hair and body care tools that some of us didn't have as children. They too need to experiences healthy natural products. My products are currently available via my websitewww.cowrieshell.com/products
also via www.etsy.com/shop/ancientblends naturals
The vision of Ancient Blends natural products sitting on health food store shelves, natural hair salon and spas this spring would not only warm my heart, it would fulfill an ancestral contract for progress and betterment of ourselves and our community! It would be a dream come true for me, as well as it would allow countless others the full access to this healthy natural product line. I thank you kindly in advance for your loving support. #ANCIENTBLENDS #NATURALCOMMUNITY #GOFUNDME

About NY Black Expo:
The New York Black Expo will emerge as New York's leading event uniting distinguished African American, Caribbean American and African entrepreneurs and business owners by showcasing their businesses in the eastern region.
For over 10 years there has been no platform for African Americans, Caribbean Americans and African business owners to connect on a mass level and showcase their products and services to the public. In fact, the state of New York had not seen a Black Expo in over 10 years. With $1000 left in the bank, local entrepreneur Mark Anthony Jenkins decided to take matters into his own hands, to start a business expo and create that platform for himself and others. Hosting networking mixers was not enough for entrepreneurs and business owners. Thus New York Black Expo Inc was created and born April 1, 2012.

DanceAfrica 2013 & Outdoor African Market: May 19—May 27, 2013

DanceAfrica celebrates the cultural vitality of Africa and its diaspora through dance, art, film, and an outdoor bazaar.
After more than 30 years, DanceAfrica is BAM's longest running program and one of America's largest and most vibrant celebrations of African and African-American dance, music, and culture. Created in 1977 to heighten awareness of African culture, the festival has evolved into a high-spirited celebration that brings the entire community together. Under the artistic direction of Founding Elder Chuck Davis, DanceAfrica features performances by traditional and contemporary dance companies from Africa and the its diaspora at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House. This week-long spring festival traditionally offers five dance and music performances; master classes; and the one-and-only DanceAfrica outdoor bazaar, a global marketplace for African, African-American, and Caribbean arts, crafts, and food featuring over 200 vendors and attracting up to 30,000 visitors per year. Students of BAM/Restoration DanceAfrica Ensemble also perform.
DanceAfrica is an annual celebration taking place in May, around Memorial Day.

May 25—May 27, 2013 (MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND)

As a member of AFRICAN HOLISTIC HEALTH CHAPTER OF NY, I will be participating at the DANCE AFRICA Festival with my Ancient Blends product line again this year! Last year was my first time back as a vendor after not doing it for many, many years. It was serious work, but I have to admit, I had a great time. So, I'm certainly looking forward to being out in the festivities again!
